Intent
Our PSHE curriculum is designed to support children to explore, grow and shine as individuals and responsible members of society. We believe it is important to enable them to understand and respect who they are, to empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning.
Our curriculum aims to help children understand how they are developing personally and socially; tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up; and promote British Values.
Within our school, children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
Our PSHE curriculum supports the development of the skills, attitudes, values and behaviour, which enables pupils to:
- Have a sense of purpose
- Keep themselves safe
- Show self-belief
- Value and respect others
- Form relationships
- Make and act on informed decisions
- Communicate effectively
- Work with others
- Build resilience and respond to challenge
- Be actively involved in their own learning
- Be active citizens within the local community
- Explore issues related to living in a democratic society
- Become healthy and fulfilled individuals
Implementation
At Callowell Primary School, PSHE is taught consistently every week, using the ‘Jigsaw’ programme. The Jigsaw Scheme, focuses on children learning to understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. This whole school programme brings together PSHE Education, statutory Relationships and Health Education, emotional literacy, building resilience, social skills, spiritual development, and opportunities to learn mindfulness techniques.
The Jigsaw programme is a whole school approach that is progressive, with all year groups focusing upon the same themed unit (puzzle) each half term, as outlined below. The puzzles (units) and lessons are sequenced so that new knowledge and skills revisit and build upon prior learning, extending their knowledge by adding new concepts, knowledge and skills.

PSHE is also present outside of the curriculum in the everyday ethos of the school, supported by our vision and values. For example:
- School Council with representatives from each class.
- Assemblies, including from outside agencies.
- Through our golden rules and school values.
- Engagement with national and community events, such as Anti-bullying week.
- Links with the Stroud PCSO team who run regular workshops for the children.
Impact
At the beginning of each unit and lesson, children are required to retrieve prior knowledge from the previous year group to build upon what they already know. Within PSHE lessons, there are also regular opportunities planned for children to reflect upon their learning and the knowledge they have gained, which is referred to as ‘sticky knowledge.’ This will help them to embed their knowledge.
Within the lessons, children reflect upon the sessions in a jigsaw journal book with an activity specifically matched to the lesson objective. Each puzzle has a built-in assessment task which provides a formal opportunity for teacher assessment, but also offers children the chance to assess their own learning.
If children are secure in the objectives within their year group, they are considered to be working at age related expectations. We assess and monitor the children’s understanding through our school online data system, Insight, where the children’s understanding of a learning objective is RAG rated: working towards, working at expected, working above.
The impact and measure of PSHE is to ensure children not only acquire the appropriate age-related knowledge linked to the PSHE curriculum, but also skills which equip them to progress from their starting points, and within their everyday lives.
In addition, we measure the impact of our PSHE curriculum through the following methods:
- An analysis of the objectives achieved and the percentage of children achieving ARE within their year group
- Moderation events within the school to demonstrate the progression across the year groups
- Pupil discussions and conferencing about their learning and understanding of PSHE within the school
